Devotees observe Hanuman Jayanti at different times of the year according to their regional beliefs and calendar type. Hanuman Jayanti during Chaitra Purnima is most popular in the North Indian states.

In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated for 41 days which starts on Chaitra Purnima and ends on the tenth day during Krishna Paksha in the month of Vaishakh. Devotees in Andhra Pradesh begin their 41-day initiation on Chaitra Purnima and end on Hanuman Jayanti.

In Tamil Nadu, Hanuman Jayanti is known as Hanumath Jayanti and is celebrated during Margashirsha Amavasya. The Tamil Hanuman Jayanti falls in January or December in the Gregorian calendar.

In Karnataka, Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated on Shukla Paksha Trayodashi during Margashirsha month. This day is known as Hanuman Vratam.

It is believed that Hanuman was born at sunrise. On the day of Hanuman Jayanti, spiritual discourses begin before sunrise in the temples and are stopped after sunrise.

Fasting and worship process

1. In this fast, Tatalik Tirtha (Ratvirpini) is taken.
2. The night before the fast, remember Rama-Sita and Hanuman and sleep on the floor.
3. After waking up early, remember Rama-Sita and Hanuman once again.
4. Take a shower and wake up early in the morning.
5. Now, take a pledge for a fast with water in your hand.
6. After that, sit facing east direction, idol or picture of Lord Hanuman. While sitting, face east or north.
7. Pray to Lord Hanuman in the most humble way.
8. Next, worship them by following all the rituals of Shodashopachara (16 rites).

The legend
Anjana was a nymph, born on earth due to a curse. She was free from this curse only after giving birth to a son. According to Valmiki Ramayana, Hanuman's father was King Kesari of Sumeru. Kesari was the son of Jupiter. Anjana prayed to Shiva for 12 years in want of a son. As a result, he got Hanuman. It is believed that Hanuman is an incarnation of Shiva.
